Ettore
734 944 0924 Saline, Michigan |
304 2bbl, floor shift auto non-posi Matador X White with black X stripe, black interior, vinyl top 82K miles |
A4C168H163985 VIN |
PS, PB, 3 spoke steering wheel, rolldown quarter windows, rear defroster fan, styled road wheels, AM, vinyl buckets |
| Ettore bought the car at Campus AMC in Ann Arbor, MI. "This Matador was restored completely in 2001 including new upholsted bucket seats (with original material) and carpeting, new Black Vinyl roof. Rechromed front and rear bumper, new carb, new distributor, new power brake master cylinder and booster, new ball joints, new rotors and calipers, new rear wheel cylinders, new shocks, new tires, new paint, new front windshield, new
radiator, new exhaust. Used parts from 3 different Matadors. Doors, Trunk lid, Hood, Right front fender and Passenger Door. NOS Left front fender and NOS Drivers side rear quarter panel.Took about 2 years off and on to do this gal. My son owns a body shop
and he did all the body work and I did the mechanials. I actually had bought a set of Black NOS stripes for it from
the dealer back in 1977, and kept them all these years and they were put on after we did the restoration.
Unfortunately, I didnt realize until after the stripes were put on that they were narrower than the originals. They
must have been for a 75 Matador X. They still look good but you can see the difference in the width. Being in
Michigan, I only drive it in the summer and have taken it to a few car shows and get a lot of questions about what
is a Matador? I call her Betsy and she looks as good as she did when I bought her in 1977." It's now for sale - $6950 obo. |

Clay Sheppard 541-563-6032 Waldport, OR |
258 6cyl, column shift auto non-posi rear Oleg Cassini Copper, vinyl roof 76K+ miles |
A4A169A VIN, Trim: 431N, Paint: F9, Body: 109947, Model: 7416-9, Production: W103887 |
PS, PB, AC, tilt |
| Clay says, "Light body work needed Driver-side front fender. A/C blows cold. Rebuilt carb and new rad hoses. New headliner. One rust through on rear quarter panel. Definitely restorable. Runs good, driven daily. Original Cassini Hubcaps. Carpet needs replaced but seats in good shape. Arm rest off passenger side door. Intermittent wipers and cigarette lighter work perfectly." It's for sale, $1500 OBO. |
|
| SOLD! |
360 4 bbl, console shift auto non-posi rear Brougham Cream & maroon, vinyl roof removed, painted cream; brown interior 89,500 miles |
A4C169P VIN; E6 paint |
PS, PB, AC, rear sway, console, rolldown quarter windows, rear defogger fan, Light group, AMC hubcaps, vinyl buckets, factory dual exhaust |
Dave says, "The car is complete and mostly original with all trim intact. There is a little rust in the lower part of the fenders
behind the wheels but the floors and trunk seem sound. The car starts and runs well, but needs a new fuel line and most of the brake lines replaced to be driveable (it can be driven, but not safely. 1 brake circuit still works.) The interior is excellent; there is one
small tear in the side of the driver's seat and a wear spot on the carpet, but everything else is fine including the
headliner. The engine was professionally rebuilt after a crankshaft failure in 1988 and needs a waterpump (noisy, not
leaking) the AC is complete, has pressure, and blows a little cold (can be easily converted to R-134A). I
obtained this car from the original owner and have all the sales paperwork from the dealer. This car would be an
excellent project for someone who is willing to do minor bodywork and some mechanics and has more time than I do!
The only body part that would need replacement is the rear bumper, which is rusty." The car has been sold. |

Todd Tischer St. Cloud MN (320) 654-0068 after 6 p.m. |

| Todd says, "Bought car from original owner. Drivers seat has one tear on seat about 10" long. Driver door has minor dent in
middle. Also has Minnesota rust but is restorable. Have gone through brakes and carb. Car runs and drives well.
Tires have less than 2,000 miles. Car was stored for about 6 years and driven very little for the last 10 years
before that. Have performed numerous maintenance items that needed to be done due to lack of driving the
vehicle." $1800 OBO - SOLD |

PS, AC, heated rear glass, full vinyl top |
| John got it from his parents who purchased it from an auto rental agency in 1974. He says, "It looks pretty worn, but it runs real nice. It has a real strong engine. It needs a new paint job, some upholstery work, a new water pump and brake job. I intend to restore it a little at a time. I am going to school right now so it might take a while. This is the car the family had when I was a kid. My parents have parked it for most of the last 15 years. If anybody has any tips on what to watch out for on Mataodors that have been parked for long periods, I would appreciate any tips. Thanks." John is the original owner. The car was purchased at Johnnies Motors, W. Caldwell, NJ, Dealer#38-1055, Zone Order# 38-T04249. John says, "It's my baby. I drove it as a daily local driver until about 2 years ago.
Now the "Yellowbird", as my mechanic calls it, is in semi retirement but we do get out to play fairly often.
The drive line is rebuilt and almost everything works, A/C included. The only thing that doesn't work is the
inside hood release. The cable broke years ago so I use a piece of 1x2 thru the grille.
The engine, carb, trans, and rear are all the original factory housings. The points/condenser ignition was
upgraded to the Ford blue dot used in 78/79(?)" |

I remember a red 401 coupe from my youth and am determined to save it. I saved it from a dismantler in 1990. My son has got me going on it now. Sunroof I don't think is factory I would appreciate some insight on this. The work is sanitary but who did it?" |

Earl New Mexico
|
304 2bbl, column shift auto non-posi rear Currently Red with black interior 64,400 miles |
A4A167H VIN |
AC |
| Earl says, "I talked to the mechanic who worked on
the car for the original owners, he assured me that the cars 64k miles are original. I'm painting it metallic
blue, putting on a dual exhaust and maybe headers. How much horsepower can one get out of one of these 304's?" Actually, you can get quite a bit out of a 304, if you pick the right combination. A good cam would be a first choice, followed by better intake, more carb, and good exhaust. The 304 produces a good bit of torque, too. |
|
Ted Marshall Margate, FL tmarsh22@bellsouth.net |
originally a 304/column shift; now a 401 with heavy duty 727 trans non-posi Currently in PPG black primer |
A4A169H VIN |
PS, PB, AC, tilt, front/rear sway bars, fiberglass custom hood cowl induction, ground effects and wing he custom built from scratch (fiberglass), hand built billet grille, filled gas door/shaved handles, Corvette tail lights, Air Ride adjustable suspension, custom two tone dark and light gray tweed interior with an overhead console and more. |
The car was built with pieces from 3 separate Coupes from Chicago, Georgia and Florida, and has been a 7 year project. As for the custom body pieces, Ted says, "I made a mold for the hood. The ground effects are shaped from foam covered with fiberglass and body worked to finish, since I had no budget for molds. May be when it is done if I find an
interest in them, molds might be made. I'm trying real hard to finish the car for Kenosha in July 2002." |
|
Scott Ankeney Xenia, Ohio |
360 2bbl, column shift auto non-posi rear Oleg Cassini White, vinyl top, black Cassini interior 155,459 miles |
A4A169N VIN, 431N trim, A1 paint, 056617 body, 7416-9 model, W056590 production |
PS, PB, AC, rolldown quarter windows, Visibility group, Light group, Body Protection group, AM, American Racing slotted aluminum wheels, custom dual exhaust |
| Scott bought the car from a member of OAMC
Classics car club. He says, "The car was in rather sad condition when I got it but at least it didn't go to the
crusher. I'm gradually replacing all the usual rust spots and going thru the suspension. Though it has a lot of
miles it still runs great and I can enjoy driving the car a bit before doing a thorough drivetrain rebuild. I
also removed (and carefully stored) all the chrome side trim and will likely change from white paint to midnight
blue. The vinyl top was completely shot and since I took off the trim I won't replace it. I would also like to have
the rear sway bar and twin-grip differential. Go AMC!" |

PS, 3 spoke steering wheel, Visibility Group, Light Group, rolldown quarter windows, AM, cloth individual reclining seats |
| Joseph's father-in-law bought it for him from a local salvage yard. Joseph says, "At first sight you think holy crap is it even worth fixing. The vinyl top is
torn and faded, there is mold on the sunvisors, mice have a home in the breather and there are rust holes in
front of the rear wheels. However looking closer, the doors shut easily and solid and they don't sag from worn door
pins. No keys yet, I just got it on March 30, 2002, so I don't know if it runs or what the trunk looks like but I
do have high hopes for this car." UPDATE 6/5/03 - for sale, $300. |

When the car is finished I will send you pictures. The engine swap was done with no major body modification but one problem was getting headers to fit without using fenderwell headers, but I got a set to work without cutting my body up. their purchase. This car was my only mode of transportation for many years (1977-1996): it has made several trips
from CA to Michigan, one trip from Michigan to New York, one trip from Michigan to Florida, and one trip from
Michigan to New Orleans. Currently the car is stored in my parent's garage. The engine and transmission are fine.
It needs body work, paint, and new upholstery on all the seats. This is a future project car. Or perhaps I will
find one just like it in better shape and have "before" and "after" cars to take to local car shows." |

Jerry says, "I have recently purchased this car in Modesto. I think it's a great car. It is in very good shape (compared to my other '74 Matador, which I will register later when I get the numbers from the door).
Body was repainted by previous owner, although it could use a new paint job due to various rock chips and scratches-
but over all the paint is in good shape. Previous owner kept the car in his garage. The vinyl roof was
replaced by the previous owner. The previous owner bought the car in 1980 from the Modesto, CA Chrysler dealer
who had taken it as a trade in." |

ready for a detailing, which I'll do this year."

with the registry. I tried to sell or trade the car as I only wanted the engine and trans for my AMX. There was
no response from any of the clubs that I contacted at the time and I did not need another car. It was in very
restorable shape and I think it only had 38000 original miles on it. I think the info I gave about the
windows, cruise and radio is accurate. The rest I am sure of." |

| The car was purchased in New Mexico. This is one very interesting car! Ross says: "Saw your ad in the AMX files. Thought you might be interested in some info. I own the 74 prototype car, it was hand built on the production tooling. It was actually used to set up the jigs for assembly then completed across the street in the engineering shop. It was used to trial fit all the new parts that were unique to the coupe. All the window mouldings are hand made by the AMC prototype shop. The car was used as the "Show Car" throughout the US circuit to introduce the new models, then sold as a "dealer demo" since the factory didn't want to take it back to Kenosha. A lady bought it from a Texas dealer and only drove it for 5 years and the mileage didn't change but a few hundred miles since Sept 79. The car is a little rough around the edges and would probably be parted if it were not for the history. It is not rusty, just sun cooked and the original 401 was removed for a racing Jeep. Not a problem for I have a correct dated 401 with all the accessories. There are a lot of things different such as the instruments are pewter in color background not black like the production cars. The car was built in June 73 and it does not have the seat belt interlock system. Just neat weird stuff.
My folks also bought a X Coupe new in 74 which is White with Black stripes, 360, 2V and loaded with every option but a space saver spare. We had it at the Kenosha meet in 1998." |

A very unusual car! "This car is in unbelievable condition - looks like 30K miles! The 4 spd was dealer installed (!) by the original owner, since he didn't like the fact that AMC wouldn't set it up that way from the factory, and looks like a factory installation! The motor has just been done with 11-1 pistons, hot cam, Hooker headers and 4.10s in the rear."Update! The car was recently purchased on ebay. Before Dave bought the car, the previous owner took the car to the track. Here's what he had to say: Date: Sun, 5 Dec 1999. "Nice weather here today in New Jersey, so I took my 401 4spd Matador coupe for test and tune at Island Dragway. I didn't feel like doing a lot of work so I left the car in complete street trim, stock closed air cleaner w/element, stock mufflers with 1 1/4 tail pipes, radial tires (never checked air pressure), pump gas, all the acces. belts on and a/c. I shifted at 5500 rpm and had to ride the hell out of the clutch to keep the wheels from spinning!!!
Results in order:
1st run-14.56@96.62 mph
2nd run-14.42@96.47mph
3rd run14.32@97.21mph
4th run14.29@96.50mph
5th run14.26@97.37mph
6th run14.24@97.57mph!
and I only opened the hood once for a curious crowd! I think I'll try for the 100 mph 1/4! any ideas????"
Now that Dave has the car, he plans to detune it a bit for better street performance and mileage by installing more street-friendly rear gears and a slightly milder cam. |
