DECK - 2005

My sister wanted a deck built on the front of her house. We needed to build the deck over the existing concrete steps, but other than that, it was a relatively straightforward build, since the deck surface was only about 3 feet off the ground at the highest point. This was my first deck build, but basic construction and engineering principles apply. When we got to her house, I made all the measurements, sketched out the basic plans, and made up my materials list. It was mostly my Dad and I building, but my Mom, wife and son helped out at various points during the build.

We used 4x4 posts, two 2x6 cross beams sandwiching the posts using 3/8" through bolts, 2x6 joists running from the ledger board across the beams, and 5/4 x 6 boards for the decking. We bolted joists to the outside edges of the existing concrete steps to tie the deck in and to provide a support to raise the new deck off the old step surface. The posts were supported by precast concrete piers. We dug down about 12" and filled the holes with dry concrete mix, leveled out the piers, and then put some water in the holes to set the concrete. For the railings, we used Peak Products deck bench brackets, fiber-reinforced polymer brackets that double as railing supports and bench seat supports. They worked really slick and saved a bunch of time.

We took care to true and plumb all the joists, beams and posts, then carefully spaced the deck boards, forcing any warped boards into position. After the decking was in place, we attached the deck bench brackets, the railings, and all the bench and railing boards. The finished product was excellent! Little details like mitering all the corners and lining up the boards really paid off. We only had Saturday and Sunday to build before I had to head back home, so the new stairs didn't get installed, but my Dad will finish that. It turned out even nicer than I anticipated, with a materials cost of around $1200 for a 23' x 8' deck.
